The scene was carefully etched using a sharp stylus - I outlined the forms and stippled the hull of the flag ship as well.

Note: A sharp stylus is essential to producing fine detail. So, keep your stylus sharp and have extra needles handy. I sharpen the needle repeatedly for each project.

When you are satisfied with the engraving, apply a thin layer of ink over the design with your finger. Allow the ink to dry - then wipe it off using a tissue with saliva. That's right...I said saliva! Water tends to remove too much of the ink. My first application of ink on this piece reveals the design shown here.

I then focus on the flag ship. I rendered the rigging and a portion of the deck using a sharp pencil - I carefully engraved all of the details.
